puposes of sound editing -
Using sound to summaries or compress a sound recording to fit into a specific space -
Sound can be edited and compressed to fit into a specific space, a common example of this can be seen in adverts. Most media artefacts are produced to fit an alocated time slot that fit around broadcast schedules. These timings are alocated so broadcasters can include a
range of content between programes, this content might include; trails, adverts, announcements or time signals. Another way this technique can be demonstrated using the news, a news story will be edited to fit a specific time slot in a bulletin that could last
anything from 3–27 minutes. Similarly, the weather forecast must always be 54 seconds or less, within in the given time slot.
Ellie Goulding's 'your song' was originally written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. It is believed that the song is a bout a seventeen year old expressing his pure and naive love. Other people say that the song was written by Elton John after he and his boyfriend had broken up for a while, he is apologizing for forgetting the small things but still remembers the felling he gave him.
John Lewis' Christmas advert uses a section of Ellie Goulding's 'your song', this is effective because the song helps to evoke an emotional response from the viewer from the first few soft notes. The advert features scenes that might be familiar to a typical family Christmas such as wrapping gifts for loved ones, making the advert have a sentimental value to the audience.
'Simulation theory' is the eighth studio album released by English rock band Muse. In this promotion for the new album, a few new tracks can be heard. These tracks have been cut down too a few seconds so the advert is able to show a range of new material, which will help to make audiences aware of the new album and want to buy it to hear the full songs, but it will also bring new listeners in as it was shown on TV so it has the potential too reach a wide range of people.
'Thought contagion' features on Muse' recently released album 'Simulation Theory'. The single had reached number 76 on the UK singles chart when it debuted, it also topped the UK Rock & Metal chart. For the purposes of the advert for the album, this track was cut down to a few seconds, whilst the full track is 3 minuets and 55 seconds long. This was an effective technique because it would encourage people to buy the album.
Although these examples use the technique of compressing a sound recording to fit a specific length of time, they have different effects on the audience. Firstly, the John Lewis advert uses a small section of Ellie Gouldings' cover of ' 'your song' for the puposes of telling a narrative in an advert, evoking an emotional response from the audience. Comparitivley, the advert for muses' new album has used the same technique on a selection of tracks from the album, for the puposes of promotion so that it encourages people to buy the product.
To ensure that any indecent or inappropriate language is edited out -
Sound can be edited to ensure that any indecent or innapropriate sound is taken out, usually for the purpose of radio/streaming or television before watershed hours. An example of this could be live television that is being shown before 9pm, the show would be aired on a delay so the production team are able to censor any unexpected innapropriate language.
Machine Gun Kelly is an American white rapper from Cleveland, Ohio. Much of his music contains inappropriate language or phrases that might not be suitable for younger audiences. This means that an explicit copy of the single is released on then album , but the song will be edited for radio to be played before watershed hours, or to be played for a younger age group on media platforms such as spotify or youtube.
Radio edits usually come with censorship to comply with decency standards imposed by government agencies, including the Federal communications commission in the United stated and Of-com operating in the United Kingdom. The edits can come from the record label, broadcasters at corporate level before the single is released for airplay, and in some cases they may come from a radio station that is dependent on local standards. The offensive words are silenced, distorted, reversed or replaced by tone or sound effects
This clip is the explicit music video for Dua Lipas' 'IDGAF', where expletives can be heard. This clip would be shown on the official chart show, but it would also be watched on demand via youtube where it has reached 471 million views. This music video will also have a clean version, helping to appeal to younger auddiences, which would be shown on channels with a large youth following.

When Dua Lipa performed 'IDGAF' on Jimmy Kimmel live, the singer was censored by cutting the innapropriate word out of the performance for purposes of live TV. This might of been because if the show is shown before watershed hour, the performance would still be appropriate for younger viewers. There was also a clean copy produced for radio play for the same reasons stated above.
These songs have been cencored for similar reasons; MGK's single 'lately' was censored for the use of radio and streaming, whereas Dua Lipa's single 'IDGAF' was censored for a live performance. These examples are similar because they both use inapropriate language which has been cencored, however they have been edited for different types of media.
To change the chronological or logical order of a series of sounds or speech -
Sound can be edited to change the chronological or logical order of events, this technique is often used when advertising a movie. The sequence of events in a movie might be shown in a different order or in a way that will make the audience have questions and therefore invest in the product.
After the death of superman, intelligence officer Amanda Waller has convinced washington DC officials to let her build Task Force X; a team of criminals imprisoned at Belle Reve special security Barraks. The team is made up of hit man Floyd Lawtong, ex-gangster Chato Santana, psychatrist Harlee Quinzel, specialized assassin christopher weiss and opportunistic George 'digger' Harkness. They are under the command of colnol rick Flag, being used as disposable assets in high risk missions for the USA. each member has a nanite bomb that is designed to detonate if any member ttempst to escape.
The soundtrack of this film became a great promotional device amongst young people as it featured many popular hits from the previous year, although it received mixed reviews from critics, the album received a Grammy nomination for the best compilation soundtrack for visual media in 2017, and it won the 2017 kids' choice award for favorite soundtrack.
'Suicide Squad' was released in 2016, it is and american superhero based on the DC comic supervillan team of the same name. The sequence of events in the trailer are seen out of order, to try and attract viewers to the film. Additionally, the use of the iconic Freddy Mercury song 'Bohemian Rhapsody' will also attract peoples attention because it has become part of music culture, although it has been cut to fit the advert. Mercury had refused to explain anything else about the song other than that it was about relationships. Brian May has suggested the song contained references to the singers personal traumas. He recalled that 'Freddie was very complex person-flippant and funny on the surface, but he concealed insecurities and problems that square up with his life during childhood. I believe that this was an appropriate song choice when trying to make people interested in the film, because i think this reflects the relationship of main characters Harley Quinn and the Joker.
To eliminate flawed, repetitive, uninteresting irrelevant material from raw footage -
Editing sound to eliminate repetitive, uninteresting and irrelevant from raw footage is important because it maintains continuity. This technique is usually found when looking at interview tapes, there will be a full uncut version and an edited down version that takes out any boring material, and making the media more interesting and too the point. Aditionally, this technique might also be used by the youtube community, as they might be talking to a camera for hours however the final video will only be 5 minuets long, for example.
This interview conducted by 2dayFMsydney with Taylor Swift has not been edited, this is effective because it maintains the original intentions of the interview. However it might become tedious for the viewer as nothing has been edited down so it might become uninteresting if the interviewee was to repeat herself or if there is a place of silence whilst she thinks.

Although i was unable to find an edited version of the interview above, I was able to find a shortened clip from it. This clip highlights a particular point that has been made, making it the main focus of the interview.

This video made by Collins Key focuses on making edible school supplies. This video has a target audience of children and teenagers, therefore it is important to keep things amusing. I was unable to find the original footage as it wouldn't have been published, however this video would have been cut down to take out any mistakes or unintersting parts. This is an effective technique for the same reasons stated above in my previous example, it keeps the viewer interested. The pair would have been shooting for hours, however the video is 11 minuets long.

These examples have used the same technique, they both have edited sound to take out any interesting material however they have used different methods and have different purposes. The interview with Taylor Swift was probably edited down for radio play, however various clips of this interview would have been released to draw attention to a particular point. Contrastingly, The youtube example has been cut down in several parts, which is clear to see, and this has been done for entertainment value. The user has edited clips with enterainment value together, and taken out any boring material, Youtubers can earn money for the amount of views they receive so it is important to keep the fans interested.
